SCOPE
Acorn Press is an independent Canadian publishing house based in Prince Edward Island, with a catalog spanning poetry, biography, memoir, and educational titles. By 2021, the company's visual identity no longer reflected the quality and breadth of what it was publishing. The project encompassed a full logo redesign and an ongoing role as book designer, responsible for both interior layout and cover design across a range of titles, from agendas and poetry collections to full biographies.

The original Acorn Press logo carried a hand-drawn, woodblock aesthetic that had outgrown the direction the company was heading. The company was looking for something different and modern. The redesign took the direction of a clean sans serif letterform with delicate corners, creating a mark that felt purposeful and well-crafted. The acorn icon was reimagined to match that same precision, versatile and ready to be utilized across different formats, from book spines to digital platforms, without losing its identity.

The editorial work at Acorn Press required a different kind of thinking than branding, one where design serves the reader invisibly. Across a range of titles, the challenge was always the same: how do you create an interior that fits its content, supports the reading experience, and maintains a consistent standard of craft across very different kinds of books.

A Note on Process
Each title at Acorn Press was guided by its content and the publisher's established guidelines. The role focused on interior layout and typesetting, shaping how each page reads and flows, as well as cover design for a selection of titles. Every book brought a different set of requirements, and the work was in finding the right layout decisions within those parameters to best serve the reader and the story being told.
